[Review] THIS IS NOT A TEST (2026) – The New Film from Adam MacDonald, IFC, & ShudderThis Is Not a Test is based on the book by Courtney Summers, originally published in 2012, with a definitive expanded edition released in January 2026. The screenplay, written by director Adam MacDonald, focuses on five seemingly normal high school students, each damaged in a different way. We follow the five from just before the zombie apocalypse hits and forward as they battle fast zombies while desperately seeking a safe place to improve their odds of survival. The five fall in together during each of their panic-driven escapes and eventually barricade themselves in their empty high school. The story focuses on their interrelationships and the tragedies and horrors they’ve experienced already just to stay alive. These core characters have lost their families, sometimes even having to kill their loved ones who have “turned.” Their relative security is called into question when a “stranger” shows up, disturbing their uneasy status quo and creating conflicts as they decide how to deal with him. This is not your stereotypical band-of-teenagers-in-danger film. McDonald avoids the usual groan-inducing tropes that appear in many films in this subgenre. The film begins by depicting each character in their current situations and relationships at home and at school, but moves quickly into zombie apocalypse territory, avoiding the trope of the carefree teens out on a trip to have a good time partying, camping, traveling, whatever. In its place, we experience each character’s reactions to what is happening to them, what has happened, and what might happen. Each character’s decisions and actions are driven by their individual background, experiences, and personality.MacDonald’s previous work includes Backcountry (2014), Pyewacket (2017), Out Comes the Wolves (2024), three seasons of Slasher (2019-2023), and the recent series Hell Motel (2025). His experience and professionalism are on display in This is not a Test. MacDonald makes good use of the high school setting to create interesting, dimly lit spaces, claustrophobic nooks, long corridors with unknowns around every corner, and cluttered back rooms. The group members claim the gymnasium as their home base, but, somewhat surprisingly, do not all cluster together. Instead, they stake out their own territory, as if to keep their distance from each other or to maintain the separation they experienced within the high school culture. The cast is led by Olivia Holt (Heart Eyes) as Sloane, the character at the center of the plot. The rest of the five are played by Froy Gutierrez (The Strangers: Chapters 1 & 2), Carson MacCormac (Clown in a Cornfield), Chloe Avakian (Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy), and Corteon Moore (From). The cast is rounded out with Joelle Farrow (Here for Blood) as Sloane’s sister, Luke Macfar
